Game TheoryMathematics
Proved that every finite game has an equilibrium, generalizing game theory beyond zero-sum.
Biography
An American mathematician whose doctoral work at Princeton established the existence of equilibrium points in games with any number of players and arbitrary payoff structures. He also made major contributions to differential geometry and partial differential equations.
Key contributions
- Proved that every finite game has at least one equilibrium in mixed strategies (1950).
- Developed the bargaining solution that carries his name.
- Substantial results in differential geometry and real algebraic geometry.
Impact
Russell and Norvig record the result plainly: Nash proved that every finite game has at least one equilibrium, and the general concept is now called Nash equilibrium in his honour. It is the central solution concept in economics, evolutionary biology, and multi-agent AI.
